This mid-size office building is the first net zero commercial building built in Palo Alto California. Designed in a highly attractive and sustainable manner. this high performance and sustainable building is tailored to accommodate the specific site configuration and the client's particular programming conditions illustrated in this construction document submittal.
The styling is Traditional Industrial office forms rendered in a clean, bright, modern, 'eco-functional' manner with care and sensitivity to the surrounding environment, solar orientation, neighboring homes, and topography while maintaining code compliant systems and fostering the overall goals of creating an architecturally pleasing aesthetic and progressively sustainable design.
Massing and materials are in keeping with neighborhood vocabulary; low and somewhat traditional, transitioning to slightly more adventurous larger massing. The building exterior is smooth dark chocolate/grey stucco which wraps around from front eastern, to southern, and finishes at the western façade. The 2-story addition is faced in corrugated, galvanized metal and seems to emerge lightly, simply, and confidently from the solidity of the existing stucco base that surrounds it on 3 sides.
Warm, stylish wood accent occurs at the fencing surrounding the property and greets pedestrians with accents of color and texture complemented by Corten steel and wrought iron gates, open entry courts, and gold fines parking area. the wood returns at the entry door as a welcoming portal across ceiling and along two sides briefly as one enters across the threshold.
Window and entry door units are based on modular sizes offered as aluminum clad, thermally broken frames with cardinal i80 double low-e glass. clerestory windows at upper level provide natural lighting to several 2nd floor spaces as well as stair halls. natural lighting enters the building from multiple directions. photovoltaic panels are arranged on the standing seam metal roofs.
